Why Minyon Falls Walk should be on your bucket list
If you’re craving an enchanting escape into nature, the Minyon Falls Walk is calling.
Nestled in the heart of Nightcap National Park, just a stone’s throw from Byron Bay, this track – with its easy through to moderately challenging routes – ranks among the top walks in New South Wales. With jaw-dropping views and lush, diverse landscapes, it’s a feast for the soul and the perfect adventure for anyone looking to reconnect with nature.

Whether you're road-tripping up from Sydney, day-tripping from Brisbane, or holidaying in Byron Bay, the Minyon Falls hike is an easy drive from the M1.
Located 33km northwest of Byron Bay, it’s about a 45-minute scenic drive from the town centre. To get there, take Coolamon Scenic Drive towards Mullumbimby and turn off onto Minyon Falls Road, where you'll find parking near the lookout.
If you'd prefer to leave the navigation to someone else, Vision Walks Eco Tours offers door-to-door transport, letting you sit back and relax while they handle the logistics.
Which Minyon Falls hike should I take?
There’s a Minyon Falls walking track for everyone, regardless of fitness level. For a quick and easy adventure, The Lookout is just a short 50m walk from the carpark, bringing you to the closest waterfalls near Byron Bay. The vantage point offers unbeatable views of the waterfall’s dramatic 100m drop – perfect for soaking up that ‘wow’ moment.
Feeling more adventurous? The Minyon Grass Walk is a moderate 4km return track that leads to the base of the falls. As you journey through dry forest, you’ll gradually transition into lush subtropical rainforest. Keep an eye out for koalas and lace monitors along the way!
For seasoned hikers, the Minyon Loop Walk is a must. This 8km circuit takes about 4-5 hours to complete and winds through towering brush box trees and strangler figs before reaching the falls. The trek is challenging, but the spectacular views make it one of the top walks in New South Wales.
For a deeper dive into the area’s unique flora and fauna, Vision Walks Eco Tours offers guided hikes led by an environmental scientist. Whether on the 4km or 8km Minyon Falls Walk, you’ll be guided through the diverse landscapes of Nightcap National Park, learning about native plants, local wildlife and the park’s fascinating geological features. It’s a great way to gain insights into the rich biodiversity and delicate ecosystems that make this region so special.

Best time to visit
For the most dramatic experience, visit during summer, early winter or on the heels of a rainy week, when the waterfall is flowing at its peak. In drier periods, the falls may slow to a trickle, but the scenery remains stunning and the walk is still worth every step.
Before you go
The Minyon Falls Walk is in a remote location, so always let someone know where you’re going and be prepared for changing weather conditions. Pack appropriate clothing, gear, snacks, sun protection and plenty of water. And don’t forget your swimmers – there’s nothing quite like cooling off with a dip in the refreshing waters at the base of the falls.
