4 beautiful hikes in South Australia
Hiking isn’t just about breathtaking views-it’s a wellness boost for your body and soul. Discover some of the best hiking in Australia with these South Australian adventures. From cliffside trails to inner city escapes these four tracks are not only a great way to stretch your legs, they also happen to be in some of the most beautiful places in South Australia.
Four days by the ocean

What: Southern Ocean Walk
This 49 km route starts at Cape Jervis and winds up at King Beach outside Victor Harbour on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Highlights: From dense forests to coastal cliffs and wave-washed beaches, every day is different on what is one of the best multi day hikes in South Australia. Keep an eye out for dolphins gambolling in the waves off Blowhole Beach, enjoy lunch with the soundtrack of a hidden waterfall at Deep Creek Conservation Park, and breathe in deep as you wander through thick forests of pink gums.
Comfort factor: Enjoy a soft landing each night when you are transferred back to your base at Deep Creek Homestead. A relaxing footbath and a pre-dinner drink get you in the mood for your restorative three-course dinner.
Three nights on the river

What: Murray River Walk
If you like to mix things up and blend a bit of bushwalking with billabong kayaking and river cruising, this 3-night, four-day experience on the Murray River is for you.
Highlights: This trip is designed to let you slow down and experience the many moods of the river. Start the day with birdsong and breakfast, before paddling through backwaters where mighty redgums offer plenty of shade. Sharpen your senses with an afternoon stroll through the forest, tuning in to the many sights, sounds and aromas, and head out of the floodplain after dinner to experience the nocturnal landscape. The Riverland is one of the best places to see in South Australia and should be on everyone’s list when they visit.
Comfort factor: Sleep in style aboard a solar-powered houseboat with a hot spa on the top deck.
One day amid the grapevines

What: The Riesling Trail
As the name suggests, this 35km trail follows the path of the railway that once ran through the Clare Valley, passing through a scenic mix of vineyards, farmland and pretty townships. A fit and determined hiker could just about tackle the whole trail in a day, but you are going to want to stop in at a winery or two anyway (one of the many benefits of hiking in South Australia!) so choose just one section a day and revel in the experience.
Highlights: If you need a break on the 10km between Watervale to Auburn, stop in for a cheese platter at O’Leary Walker Wines. Make it a grand finish at Wines by KT or Mount Horrocks Wines. The 7km Sevenhill to Clare section also takes in some stellar cellar doors.
Comfort factor: Plenty of good food and wine along the way makes for an easy day out.
One hour in the garden

What: Mount Lofty Botanic Garden
If you want a deep dive into nature without travelling too far, head to the Adelaide Hills and the 97-hectare Mount Lofty Botanic Garden.
Highlights: An absolutely beautiful place to visit in South Australia, you can opt to stroll the easy lakeside loop to admire al fresco artworks or take the more challenging Nature Trail, which immerses you in a native landscape. If you are here in spring, look for the magnolia and rhododendron blossoms; in autumn, the maples and oaks put on a magnificent seasonal display. This change in scenery goes to show there’s never a bad time to hit the hiking trails in Adelaide.
Comfort factor: Having a good time? Keep the mood going and head over to Mount Lofty House for an indulgent meal in elegant surroundings or get pampered at Gatekeeper’s Day Spa.
